Hvordan kan sykepleier fremme mestring hos ungdom med diabetes type 1?

Abstract

Bakgrunn: Norge er et av landene i verden med høyest forekomst av diabetes type 1, og i 2021 fikk 441 norske barn og unge diagnosen. Ungdom med diabetes står overfor en krevende oppgave når de skal oppnå selvstendig egenomsorg. Puberteten kan føre til perioder med ustabilt blodsukker og økt insulinbehov. Tiltak gjennom helsefremmende sykepleie kan bidra til mestring av egen helse.

Hensikt: Hensikten med oppgaven er å undersøke hvordan sykepleier kan fremme mestring hos ungdom i alder 13-18 år med diabetes type 1.

Metode: Oppgaven er et systematisk litteraturstudium gjennomført våren 2023 basert på åtte forskningsartikler og en review-artikkel. Relevant faglitteratur og forskning er inkludert for å besvare problemstillingen.

Resultat: Tilstrekkelig kunnskap om diabetes type 1 legger grunnlag for selvstendig egenomsorg. Støtte og kommunikasjon fra sykepleier og pårørende som fremmer individets autonomi og empowerment gir de mulighet til å ta del i eget helseprosjekt. Individualisert sykepleie til ungdom med diabetes type 1 ivaretar deres behov og bidrar til mestring.

Konklusjon: Sykepleier kan gjennom kunnskapsformidling, kommunikasjon og støtte fremme ungdoms mestring av diabetes type 1. Individualisert informasjon, veiledning og opplæring fra sykepleier kan styrke ungdoms empowerment og mestring av egenomsorg. Videre kan helsefremmende metoder som motiverende intervju være et nyttig verktøy. Gjennom god kommunikasjon kan sykepleier bidra til å etablere en tillitsfull relasjon med pasienten. Inkludering av pårørende og venner som en del av støtteapparatet for ungdom med diabetes type 1 kan være en ressurs i håndtering av sykdommen.

Background: Norway is one of the countries in the world with the highest incidence of type 1 diabetes, and in 2021, 441 Norwegian children and adolescents were diagnosed. Adolescents with diabetes face a demanding task in achieving independent self-care. Puberty can lead to periods of unstable blood sugar and increased insulin requirements. Interventions through health-promoting nursing can contribute to self-management of health.

Aim: The purpose of this study is to examine how nurses can promote coping among adolescents aged 13-18 years with type 1 diabetes.

Method: This study is a systematic literature review conducted in the spring of 2023 based on eight research articles and one review article. Relevant scholarly literature and research have been included to address the research question.

Results: Adequate knowledge of type 1 diabetes lays the foundation for independent self-care. Support and communication from nurses and family members that promote individual autonomy and empowerment provide individuals with the opportunity to participate in their own health management. Individualized nursing care for adolescents with type 1 diabetes addresses their needs and contributes to coping.

Conclusion: Nurses can promote adolescents' coping of type 1 diabetes through knowledge dissemination, communication, and support. Individualized information, guidance, and education from nurses can enhance adolescents' empowerment and self-care coping. Furthermore, health-promoting methods such as motivational interviewing can be a useful tool. Through effective communication, nurses can help establish a trusting relationship with the patient. Including family members and friends as part of the support system for adolescents with type 1 diabetes can be a resource in managing the disease.
