Forankret i enaktivismens
handlingsmulighetene i sitt miljø.
dc.description.abstract | This thesis delves into the intricate relationship between organisms and their environment,
focusing on the normative engagement that shapes their adaptive behaviours. Grounded in the
framework of enactivism, an approach developed by theorists such as Francisco Varela and
Evan Thompson, I examine the intertwinement between perception, action, and normativity
and attempt to demonstrate how perception acts as a vital mechanism for how organisms
adaptively attune themselves to the regularities and affordances of their environment. This
study views norms for behavioural action as emergent through ongoing interactions and
context-sensitive adaptations, emphasizing the dynamic and contextual nature of goal-directed
behaviour. From this perspective, there is a co-constitutive relationship between the embodied
form of organisms as well as perceived possibilities of action which in turn gives rise to
patterned ways of dealing with situations in the world. Accordingly, I understand an organism’s
actions to be normatively guided by these patterned ways of being, emphasizing the role of
embodied perception in allowing the organism in question to remain adaptively sensitive to the
alignment of its own actions with that of its interests. Moreover, I argue that this relation is
always contextual and depends on how the organism skilfully moves its body to deal with the
various demands of its environment.
I draw upon pragmatic and phenomenological analyses of lived experience to illustrate
the formation of meaning and adaptive behaviour in perceptually guided action. By examining
diverse examples in living cognitive systems at various levels of complexity, this thesis aims
to shed light on the multifaceted ways in which perception contributes to the various abilities
of living organisms to successfully navigate and respond to environmental challenges, thus
informing our understanding of the general principles that underpin organismic behaviour as
goal-oriented. A central aim is to elucidate the intricate relationship between perception, action,
and sense-making, hopefully paving way for further research and interdisciplinary dialogue on
the role of perception in guiding the adaptive behaviours of organisms and the formation of
norms. | |
