The project explores the application of renewable energy production and energy storagefor Gaia Salmon’s land-based post-smolt aquaculture facility in Træna. The area is knownfor challenging weather conditions, and has a limited power supply from the mainland. The objective is to investigate the possibilities for maximum renewable energy productionand provide a forecast for an energy storage system that can alleviate the power grid afterGaia’s energy consumption.
The work demonstrates that Træna has favorable weather conditions for both solar andwind power generation. Simulations in HOMER Pro show that solar PV systems with asoutheast/northwest configuration yield the highest annual energy production. A combi-nation of solar panels and vertical turbines generates nearly the same amount of energyas the solution with solar panels alone. The recommended approach is to cover the entireavailable roof area with solar panels facing the southeast/northwest direction. Regardingwind power, it is advised to install larger traditional wind turbines instead of small verticalturbines on the roof.
It is evident that Gaia Salmon’s facility will have a significant impact on Træna’s powergrid. The fluctuating energy consumption in Træna, combined with Gaia’s high consump-tion, emphasizes the importance of developing an energy storage system in Træna. Thisled to further work on a predictor for the control system of the envisioned energy stora-ge system. The results indicate that a combination of historical and real-time data onweather and the power grid serves as a reliable predictor for the expected energy sup-ply to the system. Further development may involve the implementation of RBC and aPI-regulator. In the future, the system can likely be controlled by AI through MPC.
Based on these findings, it is concluded that the installation of a 2 MWh battery atGaia’s facility can alleviate the power grid and improve the daily energy consumptionprofile in Træna. The battery can also ensure operation during power outages. However,it is recommended that the responsibility for the battery installation does not solely restwith Gaia Salmon, as Træna kommune and the power utility would benefit the mostfrom it. Further research and development of a more advanced energy storage system canfurther enhance the battery’s impact on the power grid.
