Romantisk Landskap En dekkende tittel på et barokk landskapsmaleri?

Abstract

I denne oppgaven drøfter jeg rundt tittelen "Romantisk landskap", og i hvilken grad en slik tittel kan brukes på et barokk landskapsmaleri utstilt i Trondheim kunstmuseum, malt av Gaspard Dughet (1615-75). I analysen veies natursyn, teknisk utforming, og idéhistorie i romantikken og barokken opp mot hverandre. Videre undersøkes det om det finnes et felles fundament mellom de to, og om dette er tilstrekkelig for at en slik tittel kan anses dekkende.

Analysen fokuserer på stil og idéhistorie i både barokken og romantikken innad landskapsmaleriet. Romantikken står ofte adskilt som en periode med en begynnende modernistisk innstilling til kunsten, i motsetning til det tradisjonelle og klassiske fokuset som opptar tidligere epoker, deriblant barokken. Om en snevrer fokuset ned til landskapsmalerier derimot, kan en finne slående likheter mellom begge epoker i mentalitet, utforming og skildring av landskapet. Det romantiske behøver ikke å forbeholdes til historisk plassering, men kan også forstås som en «samling av ideer», hvorved noen av disse først hadde utslag i barokken.

In this thesis I will reflect upon the title "Romantic landscape", and to what extent such a title can ble applied to a baroque landscape painting exhibited in Trondheim kunstmuseum, painted by Gaspard Dughet (1615-75). In the analysis, the view of nature, technical execution, and intellectual history in romanticism is compared to that of the baroque era. The anlysis further explores if there is any common ground between the two, and whether this is sufficient for the title to be considered adequate.

The thesis will focus on style and intellectual history in baroque and romanticism within the sphere of landscape painting. Romanticism is often distinguished as a period with a beginning modernistic tendency, in contrast to the traditional and classical values prominent in earlier eras, including the baroque. However, narrow the focus down to landscape paintings one can find striking similarities between both epochs in mentality, execution, and understanding and depiction of landscapes. Romanticism can be understood as something beyond the historical timeframe, for instance as a specific "collection of ideas", some of which had its origins in the baroque era.
