Kritisk sportsjournalistikk? Hvordan dekket NRK verdensmesterskapet i fotball i Russland 2018? En kvantitativ innholdsanalyse av NRK sin dekning av fotball-VM i Russland 2018

Abstract

I 2016 og 2022 arrangerte henholdsvis Russland og Qatar verdensmesterskapene i fotball for herrer, til tross for kritikk knyttet til menneskerettighetsbrudd, korrupsjon, og sportsvasking. Dette førte til at mange i Norge boikottet verdensmesterskapet i Qatar 2022, og flere har vært kritiske til de norske mediene sin dekning av kontroversielle idrettsarrangement. Denne oppgaven er en kvantitativ innholdsanalyse av NRK sin dekning av fotball-VM i Russland 2018, med søkelys på den kritiske dekningen. Resultatene viste at den kritiske dekningen var lav, at den avtar utover i mesterskapet, og at de kritiske artiklene er utelukkende nyhetsartikler som i stor grad er produsert utenfor NRK sin sportsredaksjon. Formålet med analysen er å gå tilbake i tid for å finne ut hvordan NRK som rettighetshaver og allmennkringkaster dekket et mesterskap i et autoritært land med lite respekt for menneskerettigheter, og hvor statslederen bruker idretten aktivt som et politisk virkemiddel. I tillegg til dette er analysen gjennomført for å kunne sammenligne resultatene med lignende analyse gjort av mesterskapet i Qatar 2022.

In 2016 and 2022 Russia and Qatar hosted the men's Football World Cups, despite criticism related to human rights violations, corruption, and sportswashing. This led to many norwegians boycotting the World Cup in Qatar 2022, and several have been critical of the Norwegian media's coverage of controversial sporting events. This thesis is a quantitative content analysis of NRK's coverage of the football World Cup in Russia 2018, with additional focus on the critical coverage. The results showed that the critical coverage was low, that it decreases throughout the World Cup, and that the critical articles are exclusively news articles that are largely produced outside NRK's sports editorial department. The purpose of the analysis is to go back in time to find out how NRK, as licensee and public broadcaster, covered a championship in an authoritarian country with little respect for human rights, and where the head of state actively uses sport as a political tool. In addition to this, the analysis has been carried out to be able to compare the results with a similar analysis made of the World Cup in Qatar 2022.
