Islands inntog i den vestlige kunstmusikken: Perspektiver på Jón Leifs sitt kompositoriske virke

Abstract

Denne bacheloroppgaven beskriver hvordan en nasjon som Island kan oppnå europeisk tilhørighet gjennom deltakelse i den vestlige kulturtradisjonen. Tematikken tar for seg nasjonalisme i musikk, og hvordan musikk og landskap kan brukes som kulturell og politisk ressurs. Oppgaven besvarer følgende problemstilling: Hvordan bruker Jón Leifs musikk for å plassere Island i den vestlige kulturtradisjonen? Sentrale metoder i besvarelsen er litteraturstudie og musikkanalyse. Litteraturstudiene baserer seg på sentrale akademikere, med særlig utgangspunkt i Árni Heimir Ingólfsson sine studier av Jón Leifs i boken Jón Leifs and the musical invention of Iceland. Oppgaven vil ta for seg to av Leifs sine verk: orgelkonserten (Op.7) og tonediktet Geysir (Op. 51). Hovedfunn i oppgaven drøfter Islands inntog i den vestlige kulturtradisjonen gjennom perspektiver på Jón Leifs sitt kompositoriske virke. Teksten konkluderer gjennom teori, musikkanalyse og drøfting at Jón Leifs forsøkte å plassere Island i den vestlige kulturtradisjonen på flere måter, blant annet gjennom bruk av islandsk tradisjonsmusikk, illusjoner av det islandske landskapet, og det kunstmusikalske formatet som utgangspunkt.

This bachelor thesis describes how a nation like Iceland can achieve European affiliation through participation in the Western cultural tradition. The topic focuses on nationalism in music and how music and landscape can be used as cultural and political resources. The thesis answers the following research question: How does Jón Leifs use music to place Iceland within the Western cultural tradition? The main methods used in the thesis are literature review and music analysis. The literature review is based on key academics, particularly Árni Heimir Ingólfsson, and his studies of Jón Leifs in the book «Jón Leifs and the musical invention of Iceland». The thesis will examine two of Leifs’ works: the organ concerto (Op. 7) and the tone poem «Geysir» (Op. 51). The main findings of the thesis discuss Iceland’s integration into the Western cultural tradition through perspectives on Jón Leifs’ compositional work. The text concludes through theory, music analysis, and discussion that Jón Leifs attempted to place Iceland within the Western cultural tradition in various ways, including the use of Icelandic traditional music, and the art-musical format as a starting point.
