Abstract

Denne oppgaven tar for seg musikalsk hybridisering og hvordan sjangre som hiphop, R&B, gospel og pop har påvirket musikken til pianotrioen Robert Glasper Trio. Oppgaven undersøker hvilke måter sjangrene har påvirket komposisjonene, samspillet og repertoarvalg på det innspilte materialet deres. I tillegg, hvordan Glasper Trio klarer å revisualisere hva pianotrioformatet kan være, og dens funksjon, ved blant annet å inkludere bidragsytere som rappere og DJ-er på konserter. Robert Glasper Trio skal også plasseres i en musikkhistorisk kontekst, for å gi et bakteppe av viktige forgjengere og innflytelser, i tillegg til hvordan trioen har påvirket musikken som er kommet i sin ettertid. Hybridiseringen ses nærmere på ved analyse av trioens låter F.T.B (2007) og The Worst (2015).

This essay deals with the subject of musical hybridity and how hiphop, R&B, gospel and pop has influenced the music of the piano trio Robert Glasper Trio. The essay explores ways the genres has affected the compositions, the ensemble playing and choice of repertoire for their recorded materials. In addition, how the trio manages to revisualize the piano trio-format, its function, partly by including collaborators such as rappers and DJs while playing live. The trio shall also be placed in a music-historical, to provide a curtain of predecessors and influences when it comes to similar musical hybrids, as well as how the trio has affected and influenced the music that came after them. The hybridization is looked at closer in the analysis of the trios tracks F.T.B. (2007) and The Worst (2015).
