Bitcoin - En volatilitets-analyse

Abstract

Formålet med denne masteroppgaven er å analysere volatiliteten til Bitcoin. For å forklare prissvingningene til Bitcoin har vi evaluert tre sett av determinanter: interesse for bitcoin, Prisen på gull og on-chain data. Vi har estimert disse determinantene med en GARCH(1,1) modell. Datasettet inkluderer 4236 daglige observasjoner fra tidsperioden 03/01/2009 til 20/02/2023. Den avhengige variabelen er avkastningen på Bitcoin. Resultatene viser at antall googlesøk på ordet «Bitcoin» bidrar til å øke volatiliteten på Bitcoin, mens seerantall på den engelske Bitcoin Wikipedia-siden reduserer volatiliteten på Bitcoin. I tillegg har begge variablene signfikante prediksjonsegenskaper når det gjelder Bitcoin sin pris.

The purpose of this master's thesis is to analyze the volatility of Bitcoin. To explain the price fluctuations of Bitcoin, we have evaluated three sets of determinants: interest in Bitcoin, the price of gold, and on-chain data. We have estimated these determinants using a GARCH(1,1) model. The dataset includes 4236 daily observations from the time period 03/01/2009 to 20/02/2023. The dependent variable is the return on Bitcoin. The results show that the number of Google searches for the term "Bitcoin" contributes to increasing the volatility of Bitcoin, while the number of views on the English Bitcoin Wikipedia page reduces the volatility of Bitcoin. Additionally, both variables have significant predictive properties regarding the price of Bitcoin.
