Mannfolk, muskler og meningsfulle øyeblikk: En analyse av nærhet, tap av maskulinitet og grensen mot det homoerotiske i Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid og I Love You, Man

Abstract

I denne bacheloroppgaven undersøker jeg hvordan vennskap mellom menn fremstilles på film, gjennom en analyse av filmene Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Hill, 1969) og I Love You, Man (Hamburg, 2009), to filmer som blir sett på som definerende for henholdsvis undersjangerne Buddy og Bromance. I både Buddy- og Bromance-filmer er det mannlige vennskapet i sentrum av handlingen, og jeg undersøker hvordan ulike definerende trekk ved denne typen filmer formidler dette vennskapet gjennom en tematisk analyse. Analysen fokuserer på de tre analysekategoriene nærhet, tap av maskulinitet og grensen mot det homoerotiske. Gjennom analysen av filmene har oppgaven som mål å gi innsikt i fremstilling av homososiale vennskap mellom menn i filmer, maskulinitet, samt nyanser i det platoniske/romantiske i disse relasjonene. Resultatene viser en del likheter, men også noen ulikheter i måten filmene belyser kompleksiteten i homososiale vennskap mellom menn når det gjelder både fysisk og emosjonell nærhet, forhandling av maskulinitet samt håndtering av homoerotiske elementer.

In this bachelor’s thesis I examine how friendship between men is portrayed in film, by analyzing the films Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Hill, 1969) and I Love You, Man (Hamburg, 2009), two films seen as defining for the subgenres Buddy and Bromance. In both Buddy- and Bromance-films, male friendship is a central part of the plot, and I examine how defining traits in these kinds of films portray this friendship through a thematic analysis. The analysis focuses on the three perspectives closeness, loss of masculinity and bordering on the homoerotic. Through the analysis of the films, the goal of this thesis is to give insight into the portrayal of homosocial friendship between men in films, masculinity, as well as nuances in the platonic/romantic aspects of these relationships. The results show several similarities, but also some differences in the way the films shed light on the complexities of homosocial friendships between men, both physical and emotional closeness, the negotiation of masculinity as well as the handling of homoerotic elements.
