En kommentar til Ovid's Metamorfoser Tiende bok: Venus og Adonis

Abstract

Bacheloroppgaven tar for seg forholdet mellom religion og mytologi i antikken, i form av en kommentar til deler av tiende bok av Ovids Metamorfoser. Utdraget fra Metamorfoser handler om gudinnen av kjærlighet, Venus, hennes menneskelige elsker Adonis, og hvordan hun prøver å unngå at noe vondt skal hende ham. Gjennom kommentaren ser jeg på hvordan Venus prøver å skjerme Adonis mot farer og hvordan hennes manglende evne til å gjøre dette fører til hans død, og hans forvandling til en blomst, som fører til starten på Adonis-kulten. Det er flere punkter som er viktige når det kommer til denne fortellingen. Blant annet hvordan Venus ikke bare er involvert i Adonis sitt liv, men også hans forfedre sine liv, og hvordan dette påvirker utkommet av historien.

The bachelor thesis will look at the relationship between religion and mythology in antiquity, in the form of a commentary on parts of the tenth book of Ovid's Metamorphoses. The excerpt from Metamorphoses is about the goddess of love, Venus, and her mortal lover Adonis, and how she tries to prevent anything bad from happening to him throughout his life. Through the commentary I look at how Venus tries to shield Adonis from danger and how her inability to do so leads to his death, and his transformation into a flower, which leads to the beginning of the Adonis cult. There are several points that are important when it comes to this narrative. Among other things, how Venus is not only involved in Adonis's life, but also the lives of his ancestors, and how this affects the outcome of the story.
