dc.description.abstract | Practicing Muslims face obstacles and different forms of discrimination and exclusion from the main Norwegian society. This paper explores how the social worker reduce this sense of alienation and facilitate better communication and understanding in his or her workplace through the application of intercultural competence. Applying this approach requires the understanding of some key concepts such as ethnocentrism, cultural relativism, communication styles, hierarchy of values and people’s different ways of thinking. These concepts will be discussed in light of the gathered literature on the subject, and we will also look at some of the criticism cultural competence has faced.
