This assignment will argue that the kingly ideal, as formulated by archbishop Eystein Erlendsson and the Augustinian milieu at the diocese of Nidaros in the 12th century, is present in the text De antiquitate regum norwagiensium by Theodoricus. The Augustinian milieu at the diocese of Nidaros was centred around the archbishop, and it was a driving force in shaping the politics of the newly established diocese. The assignment will argue that Theodoricus participated in this milieu through and analysis of De antiquitate, specifically the account of Olav Haraldsson. The ideal present in Theodoricus’ text will be compared to the ideal present in Passio et miracula sancti Olavi and Historia Olavi, through the analysis of Roman Hankeln, as well as analyses of the kingly ideal in the Law of Succession of 1163/64 and the Letter of Privilege from king Magnus Erlingsson to the church, done by, amongst others, Torfinn Tobiassen. The presence of the ideal, as well as the different connections between Theodoricus and archbishop Eystein, indicates that Theodoricus could well have participated actively in this milieu.
