gjennomført to fokusgrupper og seks semi-strukturerte individuelle intervju med totalt 11
informanter.

dc.description.abstract | This master’s study was carried out in collaboration with Friskgården. The data was
collected from previous participants in their learning and coping program “From sick leave
to long-term healthy”. This study’s purpose was to explore employers’ and employees’
experiences with a successful return or continuation in work. Two focus groups and six
semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with a total of 11 informants. The
data was analyzed using Kvale & Brinkmann’s five analysis steps, inspired of Giorgi’s
phenomenological analysis. Three main themes were identified: the need for expert
assistance, awareness and confirmation, and solutions in the workplace.
The main findings of this study are based on the employees’ and employers’ experiences
with individual adaptations and solutions in the work environment. The individual solutions
involved accommodating the workplace, in terms of work tasks, working hours and aids.
For some of the informants, the solution involved recognition and good relationships at the
workplace, with both the manager and colleagues. Good communication and follow-up
between the manager and employee were considered as an important part of work
participation. Another lasting solution was also reduced work percentage due to age and
health reasons.
The study found that including the employer in Langtidsfrisk was useful for getting input
on what the workplace had to offer. In addition, the employer and employee became more
aware of each other’s roles, as well as their own resources and limitations. This was crucial
for some of the informant for a successful return or continuation in work.
