The following paper examines existing turboprop regional aircraft and their required motor performance to determine the characteristics of PMSMs designed for full propulsion electrification. First, aircraft data are compiled to identify trends in motor design specification as a function of passenger capacity and aircraft size. PMSM design characteristics and topologies are then selected to maximize specific power. A wide range of PMSMs is designed for retrofit in the sampled passenger aircraft by employing these characteristics. It is found that the specific power of these motors remains relatively constant, while both specific torque and efficiency increase with aircraft power requirements. The main contribution of this paper is presenting a wide design space of PMSMs in the context of existing turboprop aircraft.
