dc.description.abstractThis paper provides preliminary insight into the propulsion system requirements for a battery-powered all-electric airplane during cruising. The potential and limitations are demonstrated by proposing a sizing algorithm applied for a medium-sized regional aircraft. With state-of-the-art (SotA) technology, the fully electric solutions are more than twice the weight of their conventional counterpart. Through a sensitivity analysis, the most influential parameters were the lift-to-drag, the range, and the battery’s specific energy, which gave 30 % reduction in weight by a 20 % change in the parameter. Increasing the efficiency of the electrical components also gave substantial weight savings. Finally, the paper includes promising 2030 projections. A neutral, conservative, and optimistic scenario is analyzed depending on technological development assumptions. The weight reduction is significant for all scenarios, but only the optimistic scenario decreases the weight compared to the conventional aircraft.en_US
