Abstract
Background - ME is a long-term condition with unknown etiology and a complex symptom pattern. Physiotherapists are experts in body, movement, and function. Their work can be aimed towards physical and psychological causes and symptoms, in order to increase quality of life for the patient. Treatment of ME is highly debated with a lack of clarity around the role of physiotherapy and the impact of various treatments.
Aim - The purpose of this study is to enlighten the role of physiotherapy in the treatment of ME. We do not seek to identify a gold standard for treatment. However, we aim to obtain experience-based knowledge from a selection of municipal physiotherapists, about which treatment methods they experience work well and less well with their patients with ME.
Method - We have chosen to use a qualitative method for data collection, with a phenomenological approach to municipal physiotherapists' experiences of treating ME. We have carried out data collection via anonymous semi-structured research interviews with three informants from the professional community.
Results - The informants perceive their role in the treatment of ME as supportive on their path to recovery, not curative. The results find both similarities and differences in the physiotherapists' practice with the patients. The physiotherapists use various active and passive treatment methods; including GET, activation, activity adjustment, passive movement, relaxation, somatics, massage and heat and cold treatment. The informants also use various treatment tools for conversation and guidance. Including cognitive training and mapping of everyday life for adapted energy use. The findings highlight the necessity of good trust-based relationships, good interdisciplinary collaboration and hope for recovery.
Conclusion - The study provides an insight into how a selection of municipal physiotherapists work with ME patients in Norway today. The results show a wide range of treatment measures, where the physiotherapists experience both similarities and differences in the effect of the various treatments. The bachelor’s thesis, can contribute to increased experience-based knowledge around a highly debated topic such as ME.
