Museale materialiseringer av fortiden. Moderne forhistoriske utstillingers egenskaper og virkeevne

Avhandlingen er en komparativ studie av 9 moderne Nordeuropeiske museumsutstillinger av arkeologiske samlinger. Basert på nymaterialistisk teori analyserer jeg disse utstillingene som materialiseringer av forhistorie; komplekse sammenfiltringer av museumsgjenstander, designelementer, museumsbesøkende og andre materialiteter som sammen gjør abstrakte, fjerne fortider tilgjengelig i nåtiden. Gjennom tre empiriske kapitler om henholdsvis vitriner, tidsmaterialiteter og utstilte kropper, forsøker jeg å avdekke og forstå disse museale fortidenes egenskaper og virkeevne; materielle ansamlinger som ikke passivt avventer kuratorers meningsinskripsjon og besøkendes meningsdanning, men som handler på både tilsiktede og utilsiktede måter, av og til sågar på tvers av menneskelig intensjon.

Museal materializations of the past. The characteristics and agencies of contemporary exhibitions of prehistory

The thesis is a comparative study of 9 contemporary Northern-European museum exhibitions of archaeological collections. Based on new materialist theories, I analyze these exhibitions as materializations of prehistory; complex entanglements of musealia, design elements, museum goers and other materialities which together make abstract, distant pasts physically accessible in the present. Through three empirical chapters focused on the vitrine, materialities of time, and bodies on display, respectively, I try to get closer to the characteristics and agencies of these museal pasts; assemblages which do not passively await curatorial meaning inscription and visitor interpretation, but which act and get up to both intended and unintended things, sometimes even objecting to human intention.
