ObjectiveThis retrospective study was performed to assess the quality of care at the department of thoracic surgery at St Olavs Hospital. Furthermore, it seeks to compare the patient group with other studies and evaluate whether postoperative CT-scan follow-up has been fulfilled.MethodOver the period from 2008 to the end of 2019 141 patients underwent surgery for acute type A aortic dissection. Data regarding patient demographics, history, surgery and complications were collected from patient records. Chi Square test and Student’s T test were used to analyze relevant data.ResultsAmong the 141 patients, 66.7% received ATAAD as initial diagnosis. The 30-day mortality was 22.7%. 30.9% of patients experienced some form of neurological complication postoperatively. Of the patients with neurological complications 10.6% were discharged without recovery. 75% of patients received CT follow-up in accordance with local guidelines.ConclusionThe quality of care provided by the department of thoracic surgery at St. Olavs Hospital is equivalent to comparable health institutions. The patients admitted to St. Olavs Hospital developed ATAAD roughly on par with patients from comparable countries. ATAAD remains a disease with high mortality and grave prognosis despite surgical intervention.
