For ̊a sikre høykvalitets strømningsegenskaper itestomr ̊adet, tilpasses alle segmentene i forsøksanlegget. Til tross for sm ̊a variasjoner i tankresultater, resulterte oppsetteti høykvalitets strømningsegenskaper i testomr ̊adet. Hydropower, in form of efficient turbines with long-life expectancy, is ex-pected to play a key role in the green transition. An understanding of funda-mental fluid mechanics is essential for this. The utilization of experimentaldata in form of particle image velocimetry (PIV) is a leading method forachieving this insight. In this regard, NTNU’s Waterpower Laboratory isaiming to build a state-of-the-art PIV test facility for production of accuratedata and education. To ensure high-quality flow characteristics in the testarea, all elements of the experimental facility are customized. A compu-tational fluid dynamic investigation of the pressurized tank was completedin this thesis for four different designs, including a base case, to determinewhich one produces the most optimal flow field for the pump and test section. The key difference between the configurations was flow conditioners used indifferent combinations. All the flow conditioners in the simulations weremodeled using the porous domain approach. Each configuration was sub-jected to transient simulations using k − ω SST model in ANSYS® CFX®.All configurations showed significant improvement. In comparison to thebase scenario, each combination contributed to a calmer and uniform flowin the tank. A thin flow conditioner, followed by a thick one, yielded themost promising results. This combination had a pronounced ability to re-duced the vorticity in the tank as well. One simulation was also conductedwith this configuration for the entire system. Despite slight variations intank results, the setup resulted in high-quality flow characteristics in thetest area. As a result, this thesis recommends that the design consisting ofone thin and one thick flow conditioner be used. This will enable suitableflow characteristics in the test section for the optical measurements of differ-ent engineering structures, including, bluff body, cylinder, hydrofoil, bladeprofile, convergent, divergent sections, etc.
