Målingene resulterer i akselerasjonsdataserier.
The goal of this master’s thesis is to evaluate the dynamic properties of five multistorey Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) buildings. The chosen buildings for this thesis are the five 9-storey student housings at Moholt, Trondheim. There are rarely five identical buildings in CLT, so this is a unique possibility. The buildings are in operational conditions and subjected to ambient vibration. The buildings are measured, which results in acceleration time series. In these acceleration time series, it is possible to obtain dynamic properties with Operational Modal Analysis (OMA). The dynamic properties are compared to a prepared numerical model.
The use of four Kistler accelerometers has measured the buildings. The measured data is analysed with OMA, specifically the Data-Driven Stochastic Subspace Identification (DD-SSI). From this, dynamic properties are obtained; natural frequencies, damping, and mode shapes. These methods use output-only identification, where the acceleration data is the output.
A numerical model is established to compare with the measured data. The numerical model is designed with the FE-software Abaqus. From Abaqus, the natural frequencies and mode shape are extracted. The numerical model is changed and iterated based on the comparisons to find a solution that matches best.
The peak acceleration is a critical value in tall timber buildings. Due to the material properties of timber compared to steel and concrete, tall timber buildings are easier subjected to uncomfortable accelerations. ISO10137 [1] has recommendations for peak accelerations that a building should satisfy. In addition to measured peak accelerations, calculations of peak acceleration based on NS-EN 1991-1-4 [2] are conducted and compared with the recommendation in ISO10137.
The work done in this thesis shows no significant deviations in the dynamic properties obtained from the experimental results between the five buildings. Peak accelerations fluctuate more between the buildings, most likely because of a difference in wind load. The calculated peak accelerations were significantly higher than the measured ones, but all values were well within the recommendation in ISO10137. The numerical model was able to replicate the experimental to a satisfying degree, but it was not an exceptional representation.
