Abstract

Gjennom historiens lange løp er det ofte de mest hektiske og begivenhetsrike periodene som får mest oppmerksomhet. Men tar man seg tid til å undersøke de rolige periodene, ser man at de kanskje er mindre begivenhetsrike, men samtidig langt fra uinteressant. Oppgaven har som formål å undersøke oppbyggingen av grenseområdet mellom Bysants og det arabiske kalifatet i perioden mellom starten av 700 tallet til slutten av 800 tallet for å sette i kontekst hvordan det var å leve for befolkningen som bodde der.

Throughout history, it is often the most hectic and eventful periods that receive the most attention. But if you take the time to examine the quiet periods, you see that while they might be less eventful, they are at the same time far from uninteresting. The purpose of the assignment is to investigate the buildup of the border area between Byzantium and the Arabic Caliphate in the period between the beginning of the 8th century through to the end of the 9th century in order to put into context what it was like to live for the population who resided there.
