Dance and Subjective Research in Academia: Understanding the Field through Artistic Research

Abstract

En masteroppgave som undersøker historiske konsekvenser for kunstnerisk utviklingsarbeid og subjektive forskningsmetoder i dansefeltet. Oppgaven ser på hvordan både historiske, kulturelle og diskursive fordommer kan påvirke hvordan vi bedømmer validitet i akademia, spesielt i forhold til dansens flyktige natur. Motsetninger mellom kropp/sinn, subjektivitet/objektivitet og rasjonalitet/emosjonalitet utforskes gjennom en litteraturstudie, som ser på mulighet for å bruke ideer fra feministiske teorier, fenomenologi og kroppslige praksiser for å bryte ned disse kunstige skillene. En autoetnografisk studie fra forfatterens eget subjektive ståsted gjennom forestillingen Atmospheres vil videre utforske disse spørsmålene.

A thesis exploring historical implications for artistic research and subjective research methods in the field of dance. The thesis is looking at historical and discursive biases and how these affect the notion of validity in academia, especially in relation to the ephemeral nature of dance. Oppositions of body/mind, subjectivity/objectivity and rationality/emotionality is explored through a literature review, looking at the use of theories and writing from other fields outside of dance, such as feminist theories, phenomenology and embodied practices to break these artificial separations. An autoethnographic study is conducted on the performance Atmospheres from the author’s subjective point of view to further explore these topics.
