Ornamentikk og integrert kunst i norsk brutalisme

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven undersøker den integrerte kunsten i naturbetongarkitekturen i arkitekt Erling Viksjøs Regjeringsbygning (1958) og Hydrobygget (1960), samt Fr. Lykke-Enger og Knut Engers NVE-bygget (1964). Både naturbetongen som materiale, men også flere av byggverkene, har tydelige brutalistiske trekk. Med et bredt kunst- og arkitekturhistorisk grunnlag, argumenterer jeg i teksten for at monumentalkunsten i denne gruppen bygg, kan sies å utgjøre et selvstendig fenomen i den norske monumentalkunstens historie. Den modernistiske ideen om kunstartenes syntese, vil gjennom Paul Damaz bok Art in European Architecture (1956) være et viktig utgangspunkt for analysen. Kunstverkenes relasjon til den arkitektoniske og konstruktive bygningsstrukturen, og relasjonen mellom kunstnere og arkitekt, vil være av interesse.

This dissertation examines the integrated art in the concrete «naturbetong» architecture in Erling Viksjøs Regjeringsbygning (1958) and Hydrobygget (1960), as well as Fr. Lykke-Enger and Knut Engers NVE-bygget (1964). Both the «naturbetong»-concrete, as well as the architecture itself, can be seen as brutalist. Using a broad art historical starting point for the analysis, I will argue that the monumental art in this group of buildings, can be seen as a independent phenomenona in Norwegian art history. The modernistic idea of the synthesis of the arts, represented through Paul Damaz’ book Art in European Architecture (1956), will be important for this analysis. The relation between the art and the architectonic structures and constructive elements, as well as the relation between the architect and the artists, will be investigated.
