Ivaretakelse av barn som pårørende til alvorlig kreftsyke foreldre

Abstract

Sammendrag

Introduksjon Nesten 3500 barn og unge i Norge under 18 år opplever hvert år at mor eller far får kreft. Hvordan barn påvirkes av foreldres kreftsykdom er individuelt, men forskning viser at barn har behov for alderstilpasset informasjon om forelderens kreftsykdom, trygge omgivelser å dele følelser i og hjelp til å kommunisere med familien. Helsepersonell er lovpålagt å bidra til å ivareta det informasjons- og oppfølgingsbehov som mindreårige barn som pårørende kan ha. Denne studien undersøker hvordan sykepleiere kan bidra til å ivareta barn som pårørende til alvorlig kreftsyke foreldre.

Metode Det ble gjennomført en kvalitativ studie, som baserte seg på fire semistrukturerte intervjuer med erfarne sykepleiere fra kreftklinikken på et norsk universitetssykehus. Analysen av datamaterialet ble utført inspirert av metodene meningskoding og meningsfortetning.

Resultat Sykepleiere opplever at de kan bidra til å ivareta barn som pårørende til alvorlig kreftsyke foreldre gjennom foreldrene og barnets nettverk, men også direkte i møte med barnet. Sykepleiere kan kartlegge barnets informasjonsbehov sammen med foreldrene, og de kan veilede foreldre og trygge dem på barns informasjonsbehov. Videre kan sykepleiere invitere barnet til sykehuset, bygge relasjon til barnet, gi barnet informasjon og støtte dets bearbeiding av tanker og følelser. Sykepleierne oppgir også at de kan kartlegge barnets sosiale nettverk, og sikre informasjonsoverføring og nødvendig oppfølging av barnet.

Konklusjon Studien konkluderer med at sykepleiere kan spille en viktig rolle for ivaretagelsen av barn som pårørende til alvorlig kreftsyke foreldre. Ved å styrke foreldrene og nettverkets omsorgskapasitet og i direkte kontakt med barnet, kan sykepleiere bidra til at barns behov for informasjon og oppfølging møtes.

Abstract

Background Every year almost 3500 children and adolescents in Norway experience a parent being diagnosed with cancer. How children are affected by parental cancer is individual, but research shows that children need age-appropriate information about their parent’s cancer, an environment where they feel comfortable sharing feelings, and support communicating with their family. Health care professionals are required by law to address children’s need for information and support, when children are next of kin. This study examines how nurses can contribute towards taking care of children being next of kin to parents with severe cancer.

Method A qualitative research method was used, and four semi-structured interviews with experienced nurses working in the oncology ward at a Norwegian university hospital were conducted. The data was analysed inspired by the methods meaning coding and meaning densification.

Results Nurses experience being able to contribute towards taking care of children, who are next of kin to parents with severe cancer, through their parents and social network, but also through direct interactions with the child. Nurses can together with the parents examine the child’s need for information. They can also provide parent counselling and assure parents of their child’s information needs. Furthermore, nurses can invite the child to the hospital, build a relationship with the child, inform the child and support the child’s processing of thoughts and feelings. The nurses also report their possibility to examine the child’s social network, and ensure required support for the child and transmission of information.

Conclusion The study concludes that nurses can play an important role in taking care of children as next of kin to parents with severe cancer. By promoting the parents’ and the social network’s capacity to care for the child, and through direct interactions with the child, nurses can contribute to meet children’s needs for information and support.
