Seksualitet som meningsfull aktivitet for personer med ryggmargsskader.

Abstract

ABSTRAKT Bakgrunnsinformasjon: Vår seksualitet og seksuelle helse påvirker vår livskvalitet og generelle helse. Personer med ryggmargsskader opplever at seksualitet og seksuell helse hverken fokuseres på eller snakkes om i behandling og oppfølging. Hensikt: Å utforske hvilke utfordringer og erfaringer unge voksne med ryggmargsskader opplever knyttet til seksualitet. Metode: Oppgaven benytter trinnene i scoping review. Åtte kvalitative forskningsartikler ble valgt ut og analysert. Funnene ble kategorisert i helsepersonells og brukergruppens utfordringer knyttet til seksualitet. Resultat: Utfordringen som ble identifisert hos helsepersonell knyttet til å snakke om seksualitet var behov for økt kompetanse og selvtillit på området, fordommer og praktiske utfordringer. Utfordringene som ble identifisert hos personer med ryggmargsskader var fordommer og antakelser knyttet til funksjonsnedsattes seksualitet og et umøtt behov for kunnskap og opplæring. Konklusjon: Funnene viser at personer med ryggmargsskader opplever seksualitet som en meningsfull aktivitet. Brudd på occupational justice på flere nivå hindrer dem i å utforske seksualitet og delta i seksuell aktivitet. Videre viser funnene at det er behov for ergoterapeutisk kompetanse på området.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Our sexuality and sexual health affect our quality of life and general health. People with spinal cord injuries experience that their sexuality and sexual health isn’t a focus area and does not get addressed in treatment. Purpose: To explore difficulties and experiences young people with spinal cord injuries experience in relation to their sexuality. Method: The study uses systematic review as method. 8 qualitative research studies were selected and analyzed. The results were categorized in health professionals and people with spinal cord injuries difficulties in relation to sexuality. Results: The difficulties that were identified in health professionals were need for competence and self-confident in the area, prejudices and practical difficulties. The difficulties people with spinal cord injuries experienced were prejudice and misconceptions from people in the society in relations to their sexuality and need for knowledge and education. Conclusion: The study shows that people with spinal cord injuries experience sexuality as a meaningful occupation. Multiple violations on occupational justice causes difficulties in exploring their sexuality and participating in sexual activities. The study shows that there is a need for occupational therapy competence in this area.
