Prometheus: Mythical motifs in science-fiction

Abstract

Denne oppgaven er et historisk sammendrag av hvordan den antikke greske myten om Prometheus fremstår som en tilbakevendende arketype fra antikkens tid til den romantiske epoken, til moderne science-fiction-film. Avhandlingen omhandler hvordan narrative motiver, temaer og ideer knyttet til myten har forekommet i populærkulturen, spesielt hvordan mytens unike etos har evnen til anvendelighet og nytolkning for å kommentere samtidige kulturelle sensibiliteter. Avhandlingen omhandler også det særegne paradokset innenfor science-fiction-film sjangeren, der vitenskapen og vitenskapelige muligheter ofte presenteres gjennom fortellinger knyttet til det fantastiske, som ofte knyttes til fasetter av det mytiske, eksistensielle og åndelige. Artikkelen handler først og fremst om hvordan dette fenomenet fremstår gjennom science-fiction-filmen Prometheus.

This thesis is a historical summary of the ancient Greek myth of Prometheus as a reoccurring archetype from antiquity to the Romantic Era, to modern-day science-fiction film. The thesis concerns itself with how narrative motifs, themes and ideas relating to the myth have endured in popular culture, particularly how the general ethos of the myth has the unique capability for applicability and reinterpretation to comment on contemporaneous cultural sensibilities. The thesis also concerns itself with the distinctive paradox of the science-fiction film genre, in which the science and scientific possibility is commonly presented through stories relating to the fantastical, frequently relating to facets of the mythical, existential, and spiritual. The paper primarily concerns itself with how this phenomenon comes to fruition through the science-fiction film Prometheus.
