Ledemotiv i Star Wars-filmane

Abstract

Bacheloroppgåva mi vil ta for seg tre ledemotiv frå John Williams sin musikk i dei seks første Star Wars-filmane. Hovudspørsmåla eg vil gi svar på er: Kva funksjon har ledemotiva i musikken til Star Wars, og kva er det er som gir desse tema dei emosjonelle kvalitetane som gjer dei til så perfekte representasjonar for det vi ser på skjermen? Star Wars er ein filmserie som har hatt enorm gjennomslagskraft i populærkulturen og har blitt sett av fleire millionar menneske. Filmane handlar om kampen mellom gode og vonde krefter i ein galakse langt borte. John Williams har komponert musikken for alle ni filmane. Hans bidrag gjorde at filmane fekk ein ny dimensjon gjennom bruk av orkestrering og harmoniske motiv, og endra måten vi høyrer filmane på. I analysane oppdaga eg at musikken til Williams speler ei stor rolle i filmanes utvikling. Tema kan fungere som frampeik, dei utviklar seg i lag med karakterane, og vert brukt som emosjonelle anker, og gir vekt til scenane dei akkompagnerer. Dette bidrar til å gjere musikken meir relaterbar.

This thesis will focus on three leitmotifs in John Williams’ music through the first six Star Wars-films. My main question will be: What function do leitmotifs play in the Star Wars-films, and what gives these themes the emotional qualities that makes them the perfect representation for what we see on screen? Star Wars is a movie-series that has had a massive impact on popular culture and has been viewed by millions of people. The films are about the battle between good and evil set in a galaxy far far away. John Williams composed the music for all nine films. His contribution gave the films a new dimension through the use of orchestration and harmonic motifs and changed the way that we hear the films. In my analyses, I discovered that Williams’ music plays a huge role in the film’s narrative development. The themes can work as foreshadowing, they develop with the character, and are used as emotional anchors that gives weight and significance to the scenes they accompany. This makes the music more relatable.
