Strykekvartett- og konsertkulturen i Beethovens Wien

Abstract

Denne oppgaven er en studie av strykekvartett- og konsertkulturen i Beethovens Wien på slutten av 1700-tallet i overgangen til 1800-tallet. Oppgaven følger et historisk perspektiv på hvordan utviklingen av strykekvartettsjangeren har vært, hvor den gikk fra å være en del av den private konsertkulturen til å innta den offentlige arena. Videre i oppgaven ser jeg på hvordan en av Beethovens sene strykekvartetter ble påvirket av hans omgivelser i Wien, og hvordan den ble tatt i mot av publikummet der.

Målet med oppgaven er å få et bilde av hvordan konsertkulturen utviklet seg og finne ut hvordan de sosiale rammene i Wien var med på å forme hvordan Beethoven skrev sine sene strykekvartetter. For å gjøre dette har jeg valgt en historisk tilnærming til stoffet med et blikk på det sosiale. Ut fra diverse kilder har jeg funnet ut hvordan det kulturelle og sosiale livet var i Wien og hvordan det påvirket Beethovens virke og kammermusikk.

This thesis is a study of the string quartet and concert culture in/during Beethoven’s Vienna in the late 18th century in the transition to the 19th century. The thesis follows a historical perspective on how the development of the string quartet genre and how it went from being a part of the private concert culture to occupying the public arena. Further on in the thesis, I will look at how one of Beethoven’s late string quartets was influenced by his surroundings in Vienna, and how it was received by the audience.

The aim of the thesis is to get a picture of how the concert culture developed, and find out how the social framework in Vienna helped shape how Beethoven wrote his late string quartets. To do this, I have chosen a historical approach to the subject by looking at the social aspects. From various sources, I have got an overview of how the cultural and social life was in Vienna, and how it affected Beethoven’s works and chamber music.
