Miljøterapi som ramme i arbeid med traumatiserte ungdommer

Abstract

Noen barn vokser opp under belastninger som kan klassifiseres som utviklingstraumer. Traumebelastningenes innvirkning på barnets utvikling og fungering, antas å få konsekvenser videre i barnets oppvekst. Noen av disse barna flytter inn i barnevernsinstitusjoner som ungdommer. Da blir det miljøterapiens og miljøterapeutenes oppgave å forstå ungdommenes behov og ivareta dem i lys av deres erfaringer. Men hvordan kan dette arbeidet gjøres?

Denne bacheloroppgaven forsøker å belyse overnevnte spørsmål med problemstillingen: «Hvordan kan miljøterapien være en ramme for arbeidet med traumatiserte ungdommer i barnevernsinstitusjoner?». Oppgaven presenterer relevant kunnskap om tidlige relasjonserfaringer og reguleringsstøtte og hjernens utvikling og funksjon, i lys av utviklingstraumer. I tillegg ser oppgaven på Howard Baths rammeverk om traumebevisst omsorg (TBO). Videre presenteres «Handlekraft», ulike miljøterapeutiske perspektiver og forskning om miljøterapeuters forståelse og praksisanvendelse av traumelitteraturen. Miljøterapien som rammeverk og traumeperspektivets implikasjoner for miljøterapeuten selv, redegjøres for og drøftes. Avslutningsvis rettes et kritisk blikk mot traumeperspektivet.

Some children are growing up under conditions that classifies as developmental trauma. The impact that this type of trauma can have on the child’s development and functioning, is presumed to have consequences further on in the child’s upbringing. Some of these children move into child welfare institutions as adolescents. As such, it becomes the milieu therapy and milieu therapists’ task to understand the adolescents needs and take care of them considering their experiences. But how can this work be done?

This bachelor thesis tries to shed a light on the question above with the following research question: «How can milieu therapy be a framework for working with traumatized adolescents in child welfare institutions?». This thesis presents relevant knowledge about children’s early relationship experiences and other-regulation and the brains development and functioning, in light of developmental trauma. The thesis also looks at the framework of Howard Bath, called trauma-informed care (TIC). Further on I present “Handlekraft” along with some milieu therapeutic perspectives and research about milieu therapists understanding and use of the trauma literature. Milieu therapy as a framework and the trauma perspective’s implications for the milieu therapists themselves, will be discussed. Finally, the trauma perspective will undergo a critical discussion.
