En studie om U-2 skandalen, og befolkningen i Bodøs reaksjoner.

Abstract

1.mai 1960 ble et U-2 fly skutt ned over Sovjetunionen. Det amerikanske spionflyet var på vei til Bodø, og den lille Nordlandbyen ble som en konsekvens av dette dratt inn i den kalde krigen. Norske myndigheter benektet all kjennskap til episoden, men Sovjet så likevel på Norge som medskyldig, og truet med å bombe Bodø. Bodøs befolkning hadde et helt unikt perspektiv på U-2 affæren, og flere kunne basert på egne observasjoner avsløre myndighetenes og militærets løgner i 1960. Til tross for alt bodøværingene nå sto ovenfor så finnes det lite dokumentasjon om hvordan de reagerte. Gjennom det kildematerialet som har blitt analysert har jeg kommet med konklusjonen om at reaksjonene i Bodø var til dels dempet, og at dette trolig skyltes frykten for å fremprovosere en varm krig, eller på den andre siden på grunn av lojalitet og støtte til de norske myndighetene og deres uttalelser.

On May 1, 1960, a U-2 plane was shot down over the Soviet Union. The American spy plane was on its way to Bodø, and as a consequence, the small northern village was dragged into the Cold War. Norwegian authorities denied all knowledge of the episode, but the Soviets still saw Norway as an accomplice and threatened to bomb Bodø. Bodø's population had a unique perspective on the U-2 affair, and could based on their observations, expose the lies of the authorities and the military in 1960. Despite everything Bodø`s population were now facing, there is little documentation of how they reacted. Through the source material that has been analyzed, I have concluded that the reactions in Bodø were partly subdued and that this is probably due to the fear of provoking a hot war (suppose to The Cold War), or on the other hand due to loyalty and support to the Norwegian authorities and their statements.
