730.no som speil av virkeligheten

Abstract

Denne oppgaven er basert på samarbeidet mellom emnet Medievitere i Praksis ved Instituttet for Kunst-og Medievitenskap ved NTNU og 730.no. Oppgaven undersøker hvordan Norges største frittstående nettsted for popkultur, 730.no, gjenspeiler mangfold i samfunnet i sitt innhold på sin Instagram. Teoriene i oppgaven baserer seg på hvilken makt redaksjonelle medier har på samfunnet, og hvordan både sosiale medier og deltakerkulturen har utfordret denne makten. I forhold til problemet rundt representasjon av mangfold, tar oppgaven for seg mediesosiologiske teorier, som blant annet teorier Denis McQuail har lagt frem i sin bok McQuail´s Media & Communication Theory og Stuart Hall sin definisjon på representasjon. For å finne empiri som kan være til hjelp for å løse problemstillingen, har jeg benyttet meg av en kombinasjon av en kvantitativ og en kvalitativ analyse. De ulike delene av empirien presenteres samtidig som jeg drøfter og reflekterer over hvordan 730.no representerer mangfold.

This thesis is based on the collaboration between the course “Medievitere I Praksis”at the Department of Art and Media Studies at NTNU and 730.no. The thesis examines how Norway's largest independent website for pop culture, 730.no, reflects diversity in society in their content on its Instagram. The theories in the thesis are based on the power the editorial media has on society, and how both social media and the participatory culture have challenged this power. In relation to the problem of representation of diversity, the thesis deals with mediasociological theories, such as theories Denis McQuail has presented in his book McQuail´s Media & Communication Theory and Stuart Hall's definition of representation. To find empirical evidence that can help solve the thesis question, I have used a combination of a quantitative and a qualitative analysis. The different parts of the empirical data are presented at the same time as I discuss and reflect on how 730.no represents diversity.
