In my bachelor thesis, the overriding theme is incest, where the issue that follows is: "How can family group conferencing be both a resource and a burden in the work of helping incest-exposed children and their parents?". Researcher at RVTS Vest, Dag Nordanger, claims that the consequences of violence, abuse and neglect in childhood are without a doubt one of our biggest public health problems (Stinesofiestiftelsen.no, u.å). Based on this, I want to highlight incest as a theme, and look at family councils' function in meeting with incest-exposed children and their families. Family group conferencing is an arena that facilitates interaction between the welfare state and the individual citizen (Slettebø et al., 2020, p. 14), with the intention that the child's family and network should be actively involved in finding good solutions for the child (Bufdir .no, u.åB). This basic idea in the family group conferencing intends to mobilize resources in the child's network, create space for joint information sharing and create transparency about efforts and division of responsibilities (Bufdir.no, u.åB). The thesis discusses how family group conferencing can be a potential resource in the work of helping incest-exposed children and their families. In addition, it is discussed how it also can be challenging and stressful for the child and their family in the face of incest as a problem. In light of relevant research and theory from the field, both positive and negative aspects of using family counseling as a method are clarified. Among other things, some of the positive consequences are that there is a basis for a common platform with dialogue and openness that has the child's needs in focus. As well as the family group conferencing can create trust, reduce conflict and evoke social support and courage in the family. On the other hand, family group conferencing can both maintain and strengthen unfortunate relationships. The child may also find the family council stressful as the risk of being disappointed and rejected by their own family is present.
