Sagaen, sjøen og klimaet: En studie av faktorene bak vikingenes skipsteknologi

Abstract

Oppgaven er en studie av faktorene som har hatt betydning for utviklingen av vikingenes skipsteknologi. Prosjektet for oppgaven er å undersøke hvordan klimatiske forhold kan ha virket inn på denne teknologiske utviklingen. Oppgaven har form som en tverrfaglig analyse og det tas i bruk arkeologisk, klimahistorisk og sagalitterært kildemateriale.

Oppgavens hoveddel inneholder som følger: 1. En presentasjon av tidligere etablerte årsaksforklaringer. Videre kommer en definisjon av vikingskipets karakteristikker basert på arkeologisk kildemateriale. 2. En studie av vikingtidens klimatiske forhold. Her studeres et klimatisk fenomen som fant sted under vikingtiden nærmere, den middelalderske varme perioden. Denne delen inneholder også en presentasjon av vikingenes verdensforståelse. 3. En del som tar for seg sagalitteraturen, med fokus på Kongespeilet som kilder til å kunne fortelle oss om vikingtiden. Avslutningsvis diskuteres verdien av å finne nye forklaringer til velstuderte temaer.

This thesis is a study of the factors that have been of importance in the development of Viking-ship technology. The project of this thesis is to consider how climactic conditions may have shaped the development of this technology. The thesis takes the shape of an interdisciplinary analysis and archaeological, climatological, and saga-literary sources are in use.

The thesis’ main body contains as followes: 1. A presentation of earlier causal explanations. Then follows a definition of the Viking ships characteristics, based on archaeological source material. 2. A study of the climactic conditions of the Viking age. Here a climatic phenomenon known as the Medieval Warm Period that took place during the Viking age is studied closer. This part also contains a presentation of the Vikings understanding of their world. 3. A part that addresses the saga literature, focusing on the Kings Mirror as sources to tell us about the Viking age. Finally, the value of finding new explanations for well studied themes is discussed.
