The use of photography with children and youth belonging to a social work client group in Finland and Norway

Abstract

Målet med denne teksten er å forklare hvordan fotografi har blitt brukt med barn og ungdom som er klienter innen sosialt arbeid i Finland og Norge. Photovoice, styrkende fotografering og photo elicitation er de mest populære metoder å bruke med barn og ungdom i Finland. Photo voice og photo elicitation er de mest populære metoder å bruke med barn og ungdommer i Norge. Det er populært å prøve nye metoder med barn og ungdom, så det eksisterer andre metoder også. Denne oppgaven bruker litteraturstudie som metode. Litteraturstudie metode gir informasjon om et tema ved å bruke eksisterende litteratur. Bruken av ulike fotograferingsmetoder analyseres ved bruk av Paulo Freire, feminist teori, deltakende forskningsteori, teori om mikro-, mezzo- og makronivå i sosialarbeidspraksis, person i situasjon, hjelp til selvhjelp-prinsippet og Laura Tiitinens teori om barrierer for sosialarbeidere til å bruke sosiale medier, i dette tilfellet fotografi. Fotografering er et kraftig verktøy for å skape dialog, en måte å helbrede på og en flott måte å få innsikt i en annen persons verden.

The aim of this thesis is to explain how photography has been used and how it can be used with children and youngsters belonging to a social work client group in Finland and Norway. Photovoice, empowering photo and photo elicitation are the most popular methods to use photography with children and youngsters in Finland. Photovoice and photo elicitation are the most popular methods to use with children and youngsters in Norway. It is popular to try out new methods with children and youngsters, so there exists other methods as well. This thesis uses literature review as a method. Litterature review method is based on giving information about a topic by using existing literature (Gregersen, et al., 2016). The use of the different photography methods is analysed through using Paulo Freire, feminist theory, participatory research theory, theory about micro, mezzo and macro level in social work practise, person in situation, help to self-help principle and Laura Tiitinen’s theory about barriers for social workers to use social media, in this case photography. Photography is a powerful tool to create dialogue, a way to heal and a great method use to gain insight to another person’s world.
