The past two years have consisted of government shutdowns and social restrictions in response to the spread of the COVID-19 virus and the pandemic as a whole. These restrictions and legislations have led to several industries facing challenges and uncertainty that has never been seen before. Strategy and viability have been put through the hardest trial, and a multitude of organizations have been forced to change the way they operate. In this research paper our purpose has been to give an insight in an industry rattled by the pandemic. Our goal was to see how these organizations and people have worked to combat this challenging era and therefore, this is our thesis statement: “How have cinema-leaders in the Norwegian cinema industry handled the challenges linked to the COVID-19 pandemic?” Through a qualitative data gathering approach, where we completed 4 in-depth interviews with current and former cinema directors, we were able to get an insight to how the leaders have been adapting to the changes the pandemic brought along with it. Alongside this, is how they maximized their work and effort to mitigate the negative economic, social, industrial and psychological consequences that arose in these two-plus pandemic-ridden years. Our interviews show us that the cinema-leaders have consciously made an effort to create a sense of safety for the industry, their organization and their employees. Simultaneously, indirect effects spawned from a multitude of areas have affected operation in more ways than one. Our motive for writing this research paper is to see if the cinema leaders were able to fulfill their role to a degree which allowed them to stay on both feet during the pandemic, or if these past two years were characterized by “riding out the storm.” Multiple of our respondents have been clear on which changes have been necessary to respond to the negative effects of COVID-19, and their role and way of working has changed from when an industry is flipped on its head. With this research paper our aim is to clarify the labor involved in leading, motivating and surviving in an industry hit hard by the pandemic.
