This thesis examines Harald Sigurdsson's (later known as Hardråde, king of Norway 1045-1066) career in Byzantine war service (ca. 1034-1043). To gain a further understanding of his position within the Byzantine military system, Harald and his followers of Varangian warriors are examined through the perspective of Byzantine historical and military developments. The thesis concludes that (1): Following the same pattern as other contemporary foreign mercenaries, Harald and his force is likely to have been organized as a separate unit (tagma) with Harald as its leader. (2): As a foreigner, his ability to obtain military positions and court dignities in Byzantium was largely dependant on his princely background. This was also crucial to the relationship he had with his men, who are likely to have been connected to Harald through personal ties. (3): Harald used his positions in Byzantium to strengthen his personal power and to acquire wealth for himself.
