En sammenligning av Roma og Karthagos militærvesen

Abstract

I denne oppgaven sammenligner jeg Romas og Karthagos militærvesen under første og andre punerkrig i perioden 264-201 fvt. Jeg går gjennom hvordan de to statene strukturerte sine hærer, hvordan landene innsatt sine militære ledere, men også i hvilken grad de to statene generelt var skikket til å bedrive krig. Jeg ønsker å svare på hvordan de to landene skilte seg militært fra hverandre. Jeg har i hovedsak benyttet meg av en kvalitativ metode, med noen elementer av komparativ metode der dette lot seg gjøre, og føles hensiktsmessig. Som kilder i denne oppgaven har jeg brukt de greske historikerne Polybios’ verk, og deler av Diodorus Siculus’ bøker som primærkilder. Som sekundærkilder har jeg brukt H.H. Scullards Bidrag i The Cambridge Ancient History – VII Part 2 – The Rise of Rome to 220 B.C. Videre har jeg brukt John Briscoes kapittel i The Cambridge Ancient History – VIII – Rome and the Mediterranean to 133 B.C. For en moderne kilde som tar for seg Karthago, har jeg benyttet meg av Richard Miles’ bok Carthage must be Destroyed – The Rise and Fall of an Ancient Civilization. Jeg har også brukt Jon W. Iddengs bok Romerrikets Historie – Republikkens vekst og fall.

In this assignment i have compared Rome and Carthage militarily, during the first and second Punic wars during the period 264-201 B.C. In this assignment I will touch upon how the two nations structured their armies, how they chose their military leaders, but also how adept they in general where at waging war. I wish to answer how the two countries separated from each other militarily. Mainly I have used a qualitative method, with some elements of comparative method where this was doable and felt appropriate. As sources in this assignment I have used the Greek historians Polybius’ works, and parts of Diodorus Siculus’ bokks as primary sources. As secondary sources I have used H.H. Scullards contribution in The Cambridge Ancient History – VII Part 2 – The Rise of Rome to 220 B.C. Furthermore I have Used John Briscoes chapter in The Cambridge Ancient History – VIII – Rome and the Mediterranean to 133 B.C. For a modern source that deals with Carthage, I have used Richard Miles’ book Carthage must be Destroyed – The Rise and Fall of an Ancient Civilization. I have also used Jon W. Iddeng’s book Romerrikets Historie – Republikkens vekst og fall.
