Sammendrag
Denne masteroppgaven består av to artikler. This master thesis consists of two articles. The first article, Integration, individuals and society – classical integration theory and its relevance in modern integration research, studies integration as a process and as a term. It is grounded in classical integration theory based on the theories of the sociologist Emile Durkheim and Thomas H. Marshall, and how these theories can be understood and applied in a modern discussion concerning the integration of immigrants in Norway. Reviewing modern research on this topic shows how the theories of Durkheim and Marshall is still relevant to showcase the challenges related to integration. The discussion also addresses the relationship between individuals and the state, and responsibility of different levels. To conclude, I discuss different perspectives on the term of integration and I argue that an expanded understanding of the term could contribute to future discussions being more open and less controversial. The second article «She cares from the heart». A qualitative study of the significance of care in integration work with ethnical minority students, is an empirical article also based on classical integration theory. In this article I explore the importance of care as an instrument in integration work with ethnical minority students: how this care is expressed and the significance of care on an individual and societal level. The study is based on qualitative data extracted from interviews conducted with 14 students, all of whom have a background as refugees or immigrants, at a high school in Trondheim. The analysis of the data showcases that care is expressed in several different ways and, inspired by grounded theory, I have developed the categories ‘emotional care’, ‘practical care’ and ‘holistic care’. I argue that care plays a significant part in the integration process of the students, and that the schools minority counselor have an important role in this context. Furthermore I discuss how care is directly linked to the students developing trust in the Norwegian society, and that this can have an important effect on societal integration. The ambition of the article is to contribute to discussions surrounding the integration and inclusion of immigrants in Norwegian society, and highlight the importance of care as a part of the integration process.
