Sjangerlek og distinksjon i chanson française: En undersøkelse av Serge Gainsbourgs musikk, estetikk og artistpersona

Abstract

Oppgaven omhandler den franske artisten Serge Gainsbourg (1928-1991), med fokus på hans eklektiske holdning til chanson-sjangeren og sammenblanding av uttrykk fra forskjellige nivåer av kulturell legitimitet. Særlig viktig er hans tvetydige holdning til forholdet mellom kunst og underholdning, mellom det man gjerne kaller høykultur og lavkultur. Musikken som analyseres er deler av hans produksjon i årene 1968-1971. Dette var en periode hvor han hadde behørig etablert seg innen et pop-idiom, samtidig som han ofte inkluderte symfoniske og klassisistiske teksturer, blant annet gjennom overdådig orkestrering og direkte melodiske siteringer av klassiske verker. Oppgavens forsett er å undersøke hvordan blandingen mellom ulike kulturelle registre utspiller seg i Gainsbourgs musikk, og hvordan dette aspektet gjenspeiler seg i hans persona og øvrige kunstproduksjon.

The thesis is about the French artist and composer Serge Gainsbourg (1928-1991), paying special attention to his eclectic take on the chanson genre and the juxtapositions of different cultural registers within his music. He had ambiguous views on the relationship between art and commerce, as well as between so-called high and low culture. To illuminate these themes, a collection of his songs from 1968-1971 will be analysed. This was a period where Gainsbourg, after having established himself in a modern pop sound, often made use of symphonic and classicistic musical textures, through lush orchestrations and melodic citations of classical works. The thesis sets out to examine how the mixture of different cultural registers functions in the music of Gainsbourg, and how this is reflected in his persona and other artistic production.
