Summary of the thesis
This thesis considers planning problems arising in the Roll-on Roll-off (RoRo) shipping industry. The problems are formulated and described mathematically, and methodology from the field of Operations Research (OR) is used to provide decision support for the industry. There are a vast majority of problem types that are relevant within the domain of maritime transportation. In this thesis, two of these problem types are studied in more detail. The RoRo ship stowage problem is the problem of planning where to place the cargo on board the ship. Where the items are placed relative to one another impacts the quality of the stowage plan. The second planning problem considered in this thesis is the Single Trade Ship Routing and Scheduling Problem (STSRSP), which includes decisions such as which ships to use and where to sail. A central part of the problem is the separation of voyages. For example, some customers may require the contracted volume to be split among multiple services, fairly evenly spread in time. As such, when to visit each customer are crucial decisions to maintain a high level of service. The focus of this thesis is to develop optimization models that may support planners in their decision-making.
This thesis consists of five research papers. The first three papers consider the RoRo ship stowage problem, while the last two consider STSRSP. An important contribution of this thesis is the mathematical descriptions of the problems. Methodology from the field of OR is used for solving and analyzing the problem. For both problem types, heuristics are developed to solve realistically sized instances of the problem. Further, this thesis has a high focus on industrial applications, and the modeling approaches reflect this. Case studies are conducted to provide managerial insights, and the results show that the use of OR methodology may significantly affect the efficiency within this industry.
Sammendrag av avhandlingen
Avhandlingen tar for seg planleggingsproblemer innenfor Roll-on Roll-off (RoRo) shippingindustrien. I denne avhandlingen presenteres følgende to problemstillinger; stuasje- og ruteproblemer.
