This master thesis is about the slasher movie and the different eras of the slasher movie. The slasher movie is a subgenre of horror movies that originated in the end of the 1970s and has become distinctive by the way it follows a certain formula. The research question for this thesis is: What are the primary hallmarks of the three slasher movies Halloween, Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street, and what are some of the most important similarities and differences between the original films and the remakes? The thesis will first deal with the history of the slasher movie and how the genre was established. Here I will also write about how the slasher-conventions originated and which elements that is essential for the slasher movie. Then the three movies from the classical period will be thoroughly analyzed, Halloween (1978) directed by John Carpenter, Friday the 13th (1980) directed by Sean S. Cunningham and A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) directed by Wes Craven. The movies will be analyzed compared to the elements in the slasher movie and I will explain how these movies are a part of this genre. Then I will compare the three movies with each other and examine what are the similarities and differences between the three movies and what distinguishes the movies from this period. The three movies were then remade in the 2000s. Halloween in 2007, directed by Rob Zombie, Friday the 13th 2009, directed by Marcus Nispel and A Nightmare on Elm Street in 2010 by Samuel Bayer. The next chapter will focus on the remakes and how they fit into the genre. Here I will compare the three remakes with each other and with the originals. Here I will point to what distinguishes the remakes. Eventually I will summarize my findings in a final chapter. Lastly I will present some viewpoints about the future of the slasher movie.
