The Last Supper in the Museum is a study of an Eucharistic container at the NTNU University Museum in Trondheim. This bachelorette thesis in art history combines iconographic method with comparative and exhibition analysis to illuminate the objects context and meaning. Through the iconographic method there has been concluded that five of the six figures depicted are female saints belonging to the groups The Fourteen Holy Helpers and the Capital Virgins. The last of the six figures is a representation of Christ from the Gospel of St. John, where Christ appeared before Mary Magdalene after he rose from the grave. The extensive representation of the women encircling around Christ may indicate that the Eucharistic container came from a female monastery. Through comparison with other objects, the findings indicate that the Eucharistic container originated from Trøndelag. When everything is put in context, its therefor possible to assume the Eucharistic container originates from Rein’s female monastery. This thesis also examinates what happens to an object when it is removed from its original context. Over time, the Eucharistic container has been removed from the church and placed in the museum display box, and thus represents something other than originally intended. In the display box the Eucharistic container is transformed into a prop in the tales of Trondheim’s early scientists.
