Water No Get Enemy Fela Kuti og hans afrobeat-imperiums protestmusikk

Abstract

Denne bacheloroppgaven handler om Fela Kuti og hans musikk. I oppgaven forsøker jeg å finne ut om det er en sammenheng mellom musikken og tekstene i Felas afrobeat. Problemstillingen i oppgaven er som følger: «I hvilken grad er det en sammenheng mellom musikk og tekst i Fela Kutis opposisjonelle afrobeat?» For å svare på det trekker jeg frem forskjellige elementer igjennom oppgaven. Jeg forklarer hva afrobeat er, analyserer seks sanger, og ser på typiske virkemidler, både instrumentalt og musikalsk innen afrobeat. Som den politiske aktivisten Fela var, skriver jeg også en del om hans filosofi, dens bakgrunn og hva som fikk han politisk engasjert, samt litt om hvilke elementer som gjorde at folk fulgte ham, både filosofisk og av personlig karakter. Jeg skriver også litt om Kalakuta-imperiet, Felas autonome område hvor residenter som var følgere av ham og hans ideolog levde. I tillegg handler en liten del av oppgaven om Felas faste spillested, en viktig arena i Felas liv, hvor han fikk gitt utrykk for sine opposisjonelle holdninger og filosofier. Til slutt oppsummerer jeg oppgavens innhold, samt argumentene fremlagt i oppgaven og konkluderer i henhold til problemstillingen.

This Bachelor’s thesis discusses Fela Kuti and his music. In the thesis I attempt to determine whether there is a correlation between the music and the lyrics in Fela’s Afrobeat. The research question for this bachelor’s thesis is as follows: “To what degree is there a correlation between the music and the lyrics in Fela Kuti’s oppositional Afrobeat?” to answer this question I take a look at different elements throughout the thesis. I explain what afrobeat is, analyze six songs, as well as describe the contents, both instrumentally and musically of a typical Afrobeat song. As the political activist Fela is, I also write a part regarding his ideology, its background and what made him politically engaged, as well as which elements made people follow him and his ideology, both his personal and philosophical characteristics. I write a part about the Kalakuta empire, Felas autonomous communal compound, where followers of him and his ideology lived. In addition, a small part of the thesis covers Fela’s regular gigging club, an important arena in Fela’s life, where he got to express his oppositional views and philosophies. Finally, I summarize the contents of the thesis, as well as the arguments brought out and conclude according to the research question.
