Diamantindustrien i Gullkysten 1919 - 1929

Abstract

Oppgaven tar for seg utvinningen av diamanter i Gullkysten, på 1920-tallet, med kontekst i bakgrunnen til det internasjonale diamantmarkedet, og historien til Gullkysten som en koloni. Det internasjonale markedet hadde utviklet en status som et verdensomspennende kartell allerede før de første oppdagelsene av diamanter i Gullkysten. Gullkystens situasjon som en koloni ble også viktig for utviklingen av industrien. Derfor er også en nærliggende koloni hvor det ikke lenge etter også ble oppdaget diamanter tatt inn for å sette Gullkysten i kontekst, nemlig Sierra Leone. Oppgaven tar derfor for seg temaer som: byen Kimberley, Cecil Rhodes, Barney Barnato, diamantsyndikatet, Ernest Oppenheimer, guvernør Guggisberg, kong Nana Ofori Atta I., Akim Abuakwa, Consolidated African Selection Trust, Akim Diamondfields, Russo-Asiatic Consolidated Company, politikk imellom kolonihøvdinger og arbeiderhistorie.

The assignment brings up the production of diamonds in the Gold Coast in the 1920s, with a background in the international diamond market, and the Gold Coast's backround as a colony. The international market had developed a status of a world wide cartel already by the time the first diamonds were discovered in the Gold Coast. The Gold Coast's status as a colony was also important for the development of the industry. Hence, a nearby colony where, not long after, there was also discovered diamonds is brought up to put the Gold Coast in a better context, Sierra Leone. The assinment will therefore bring up topics such as: the city Kimberley, Cecil Rhodes, Barney Barnato, the diamond Syndicate, Ernest Oppenheimer, governor Guggisberg, king Nana Ofori Atta I., Akim Abuakwa, Consolidated African Selection Trust, Akim Diamondfields, Russo-Asiatic Consolidated Company, politics between colonial chiefs labour history.
