Background and purpose The purpose of this study is to shed light on how young blind and partially sighted people experience participating in digital communication. It aims to describe experiences with universal design of applications and platforms, use of social media, experiences with visual elements in communication, as well as coping strategies where communication is challenging. The starting point of the study is that it is the blind and partially sighted themselves who have the best knowledge of how digital communication in today's society works, and thus a natural approach was to obtain information through conversations with young people in the target group, and then interpret the findings according to relevant theoretical perspectives and previous research in the field. Problem statement How do adolescents and young adults who are blind or severely visually impaired experience inclusion and exclusion in digital communication? Methodological approach The empirical basis was obtained through individual semi-structured in-depth interviews with seven adolescents / young adults who are severely visually impaired or blind, aged 16-22 years. The data material was analyzed on the basis of a step-by-step inductive method (Tjora, 2017). Theoretical perspectives This study has a phenomenological approach, and it has the relative understanding of disability as its main foundation. The empirical data are interpreted in the light of theoretical perspectives related to normality and stigma, stress and coping theory, as well as previous visual impairment research related to inclusion and exclusion, identity negotiations and universal design. Findings Despite the fact that the informants in this study experience that the technological development and current digital platforms contribute to accessibility and participation in many areas of everyday life, they also describe the experience of barriers that make being equal participants in the community challenging. This is especially prominent in communication with peers. The main challenge is the lack of universal design of applications and platforms, and visual elements in communication (especially on frequently used social media such as Instagram and Snapchat). The assistive technology does not provide descriptions that are detailed enough for the informants to feel that they can be equal participants. They find it emotionally difficult to constantly ask friends and classmates to describe photos and videos shared on social media. Most people end up choosing strategies such as asking parents to describe pictures (which leads to them experiencing a negative impact on the parent-child relationship), they withdraw from digital communication that is visually based, or they relate to environments where visual communication is less prominent (older people or others with a visual impairment). These factors (which work exclusively) have an impact on the experience of coping, identity negotiations and general participation in the social community. All the informants have experienced the mentioned factors, but the extent to which they experience that the exclusionary factors affect social participation, seems to be about connection to, and support from, the social network of peers. Emotional challenges thus emerge to the greatest extent from those of the informants who have generally experienced exclusion in their upbringing, or those who are in the process of establishing themselves in new environments and are about to create new social relationships.
