dc.description.abstract | This study has focused on young women's Instagram use, particularly how they present
themselves and what they think about other users' corresponding self-presentation. The
aim of the study has been to find out which thoughts and feelings that emerge when the
informants describe their own and other's uses of the service. A qualitative in-depth
interview was conducted among nine Norwegian women aged 19 - 28 years.
I start by introducing the aim of the study and my motivation. Thereafter I give an
account of the existing media research and theory that I consider to be relevant for this
study, before I present and give reasons for my methodology. In the analytic part, I
discuss my findings in elucidation of the theory and existing research in the field. Finally I
summarize my findings and make suggestions for further research.
The analysis of the findings, suggests some possible identified motivations for using
Instagram. The women use Instagram to observe and obtain information about others,
communicate and interact with them, and to be entertained by them. The informants all
say that they can experience comparison of themselves with either friends or celebrities.
The distribution of who they compare themselves with is approximately 50-50. Similar
for all of them, is that they describe the social comparison as upwards directed, which
seems to possibly have an effect on their self-confidence. Based on their reflections, it
seems that they are experiencing some unwritten norms for how one should behave and
what content one can publish on Instagram, which may have been created among the
users of the network. The informants say that they experience that Instagram has
become a society where a lot of users present a facade. This form of self-presentation is
something the informants describe in negative terms. However, based on their
description of their own content publishing, it has been discussed in this study that they
might contribute in maintaining this type of facade by their own self-presentation. A
possible finding is that the informants are reducing cognitive dissonance between their
norms and their own publishing practises. It also emerges that none of the informants
were willing to publish something that can be perceived as emotionally challenging. Their
self-presentation seems to be solely about showing aspects of life that are considered
positive. | |
