Kunst og media som filmatiske markører av romanse: Intermedial kurtise i Portrait of a Lady on Fire og Call Me by Your Name

Abstract

Denne oppgaven vil se på hvordan flørten, kurtisen og romansen blir portrettert i de romantiske filmene Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Sciamma, 2019) og Call Me by Your Name (Guadagnino, 2017). Filmene skiller seg fra klassiske troper innenfor den romantiske filmen i det at flørten, kurtisen og romansen mellom filmenes protagonister fortrinnsvis ikke blir representert gjennom direkte kommunikasjon som kroppskontakt og dialog. Filmene fremstiller flere kunst- og medieuttrykk, som spiller ulike roller i relasjonen mellom protagonistene. Det vil bli sett på hvordan disse kunst- og medieuttrykkene blir brukt til å fremstille flørten, kurtisen og romansen, i tillegg til å etablere kommunikasjon, nærhet og intimitet mellom protagonistene.

I oppgaven vil teori om romanse i film, sjanger i film, intermedialitet og intermedialitet i film bli anvendt i to næranalyser av Portrait og CMBYN for å se hvordan kunst- og medieuttrykkene i filmene kan ha meningsbærende funksjoner i vår forståelse av karakterene og deres relasjoner.

This thesis will assess how flirting, courtship and romances is portrayed in the romantic movies Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Sciamma, 2019) and Call Me by Your Name (Guadagnino, 2017). These films differ from familiar tropes of romantic movies by not mainly portraying flirting, courtship, and romance between the protagonists through direct communication such as bodily contact or dialogue. The films present several expressions of art and media, which play different parts in the relationships between the films’ protagonists. This thesis aims to discern how expressions of art and media are applied to show flirting, courtship and romance, as well as to establish communication, nearness, and intimacy between the protagonists.

Close analyses of these films will apply theories in the fields of romance, romance in cinema, genre in cinema, intermedialty and intermediality in cinema. The analyses will try to ascertain in which ways expressions of art and media can construct meaning in our understanding of characters and their relations.
