In Norway, approximately five thousand substance abusers receive interdisciplinary treatment for substance dependence, each year. Studies shows that nine out of ten patients have psychiatric health problems in addition to their substance abuse, and seventy percent suffer from one or multiple personality disorders. Many of the patients have a historic of childhood neglect and serious violations such as domestic violence and sexual abuse. At a substance dependence treatment institution, the patients are given an interdisciplinary treatment individually tailored to each patient, all within an environmental therapeutic context. The treatment model emphasizes on recognizing and giving treatment to all aspects of the patient’s life, all within the interaction with the therapeutic community at the institution.
