#Funksjonshemming - Ei kvalitativ tekstanalyse av funksjonshemming og funksjonsnedsetting på Instagram.

Abstract

Samandrag Føremålet med dette masterprosjektet var å undersøke måtar funksjonshemming og funksjonsnedsetting kan bli framstilt på sosiale medium, og eg valte å analysere innlegg og emneknaggar på Instagram. Undersøkinga er ei kvalitativ tematisk tekstanalyse, og datamaterialet rommar 40 samansette tekstar frå fire norske kvinner samt 275 enkeltståande emneknaggar. Enkeltståande tyder at eg inkluderte knaggane uavhengig av innlegga dei var/er del av. Problemstillinga i oppgåva er: På kva måte kan funksjonshemming og funksjonsnedsetting bli framstilt på Instagram? Hovudfunn er at mediebrukarane tematiserer Funksjonshemming og funksjonsnedsetting som barrierar samt at dei løftar fram Funksjonsvarians, tilgjenge og inkludering. Døme på sistnemnde er forklaringar av funksjonshemming og funksjonsnedsetting som både kroppslege og samfunnsskapte barrierar. Førstnemnde kjem til uttrykk gjennom skildringar av symptom og verknader, i tillegg til at særleg ei av kvinnene nemner den medisinske diagnosen eksplisitt. I innlegga om samfunnsmessige barrierar viser kvinnene fram ulike faktorar som verkar funksjonshemmande, og dei omtaler både fysiske omgjevnader og samfunnsmessige haldningar. Nært knytt til desse er tematiseringa av Funksjonsnedsetting som ein kamp, der innleggsforfattarane skildrar ulike utfordringar som nedsettingane kan medføre. Skildringar av ulike typar smerter og symptom står sentralt i desse framstillingane, men mediebrukarane fortel òg at dei gjennomfører ulike aktivitetar til trass for desse. Vidare er ordlydar som «å vinne over,» «bukke under,» «å makte» og at «kroppen straffer» illustrerande for forståingar av funksjonshemming og funksjonsnedsetting som ein kamp. Sentrale emneknaggar er eksempelvis #disabilitiessuck, #mswarrior og #cerebralpalsyfighter. Mangfald og inkludering går att i store delar av datamaterialet, og tematiseringa inkluderer mellom anna framstillingar av funksjonshemming og -nedsetting som kroppsleg mangfald. Sistnemnde blir eksemplifisert med verknader i høve utsjånad, men også gjennom at alle kan danse. Gjeldande innleggsforfattar understrekar at det er variasjonane i kroppane våre som gjer dans interessant, og ho syner til at det er mange måtar å utføre ulike steg og vendingar på. Deretter femner kategoriseringa òg om framstillingar av ulike hjelpemiddel, og desse blir løfta fram som grunnleggjande for mediebrukarane. Argumentasjonen underbyggjast med tilvisingar til at tilgang på tolk mogleggjer deltaking i blant anna studieaktivitetar. Funnet blir vidare understøtta med #hearingaidsrock og #hearingaidsarecool.

Abstract The purpose of this master’s thesis was to investigate in what ways disability and impairment can be portrayed on social media, and I chose to analyse posts and hashtags published on Instagram. The survey is a qualitative thematic text analysis, and the data material contains 40 texts from four Norwegian women as well as 275 hashtags. I included the hashtags regardless of the posts they were/are a part of. The approach to the problem is: In what ways can disability and impairment be presented on Instagram? The main findings are that disability and impairment is themed as barriers, but also that the women highlight perspectives like variance, accessibility, and inclusion. Examples are explanations of disability and impairment as both physical and societal barriers. This is expressed through descriptions of symptoms and effects of these, in addition to the fact that one of the women in particular mentions the medical diagnosis explicitly. In the posts about social barriers, the women show various factors that describe disability and impairment, and they discuss both physical surroundings and attitudes. Closely related to these themes is the thematization of disability as a struggle, where the authors describe various challenges that the disabilities may entail. Depictions of different types of pain and symptoms are central to these presentations, but the media users also say that they participate in various activities despite these symptoms. Key hashtags to illustrate this are #disabilitiessuck, #mswarrior and #cerebralpalsyfighter. Diversity and inclusion can be found in large parts of the data material, and the thematization includes representations of disability and impairment as physical diversity. The categorization also includes a presentation of various recourses, and these are highlighted as basic for participation. An argument to this is substantiated with references to the fact that access to an interpreter enables participation in for example study activities. The finding is further supported with the hashtags #hearingaidsrock and #hearingaidsarecool.
