Temaet i denne oppgaven er seksualitet og sosialt arbeid. Seksualitet er en viktig del av menneskers liv, men det snakkes lite om i sosialt arbeids faglitteratur og undervisning. Det er gjort liten forskning på hvordan sosionomer skal forholde seg til seksualitet i samtale med klienter, men det forventes i noen tilfeller at sosionomer skal ta opp temaet. Det tas utgangspunkt i at få sosionomer faktisk tematiserer seksualitet i sitt arbeid. Målsettingen for oppgaven er å utforske hva som hindrer sosionomer fra å snakke åpent om seksualitet, og deretter beskrive hvilke elementer som kan bidra til å snakke åpent om seksualitet i samtale med klienter. Oppgaven tar til sikte på å plassere seksualitet i en sammenheng med sosialt arbeids faglitteratur.

Jeg tar for meg problemstillingen «Hvorfor snakker vi ikke om seksualitet, og hva kan bidra til at sosionomer snakker åpent om seksualitet i samtale med klienter?». Det er gjennomført en litteraturstudie med litteratursøk som metode for å finne litteratur som er relevant for å belyse problemstillingen.

Studien viser et toveis-tabu rundt seksualitet, der både klienter og profesjonsutøvere vegrer seg for å ta opp tema i samtale. Sosionomen kan hjelpe klienter til å opp tema, og legge til rette for en trygg relasjon der klient kan dele sine tanker og følelser. Det viser seg som viktig å bli bevisst sine egne verdier knyttet til flere sider av seksualitet, slik at de uttrykkes som skjulte holdninger som påvirker profesjonsutøvelsen. Studien introduserer PLISSIT-modellen som en mulig pedagogisk modell som kan knytte sosialt arbeid og seksualitet sammen i praksis. Studien konkluderer med at sosionomer kan motvirke tabu rundt seksualitet ved at de våger å tematisere det i samtaler med klienter. En heving av kunnskap og kompetanse rundt seksualitet kan bidra til dette.

Abstract

The theme of this assignment is sexuality and social work. Sexuality is an important part av people ́s lives, but it is rarely mentioned in the literature and lectures of the social work education. There is little research on how social workers can address sexuality in conversations with clients, but in some cases, it is expected. The assignment is based on the belief that social workers rarely addresses sexuality in their work. The objective of the text is to explore what keeps us from talking openly about sexuality, and thereafter describe some elements that can promote social workers’ addressing sexuality when working with clients. It is my aim to place sexuality in the professional perspective of the social worker.

My main approach is based on the issue «Why aren’t we talking about sexuality, and how can we contribute to social workers’ addressing sexuality in conversations with clients?». Following, the assignment is a literary study, where multiple searches was completed to find relevant literature to illuminate the issue of the assignment.

The study shows sexuality as a two-way-taboo, whereas both clients and professionals evade the topic in conversation. The social worker can give clients the support they need to address sexuality as a subject and can also create a safe relation where the client can share thoughts and feelings. Also, the study describes the importance of acknowledging values and attitudes towards sexuality, to prevent hidden attitudes from influencing the social workers’ perspective. The PLISSIT-model is introduced as a possible educational model that allows a tie between social work and sexuality in practice situations. The study concludes that social workers can counteract the taboo of sexuality by daring to address it in working with clients, and that a raise of knowledge and competence around sexuality in social work can contribute to this.
